Happy Birthday to Mr. William H. Seward

Happy Birthday to Mr. William H. Seward, born May 16, 1801!! :-)

Why I just love me some William H. Seward:

1. Seward was a founding PROGRESSIVE member of the Republican party.

2. Seward defies "that's just the way it was then, nothing you can do". He defied the status quo and even went "underground" working with Harriet Tubman's Underground Railroad. Seward's surrounding neighbors, Susan B. Anthony (whose name has been hijacked by a hatriot group promoting of all people, Sarah Palin), Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Frederick Douglass, were constant reminders of "we can do better" and "we will do better".

3. Seward was a best friend of Harriet Tubman, and helped run Underground Railroad with her and his wife and family. Seward also sold Harriet Tubman her home, which is still 2 blocks from his own home in Auburn, NY, and did so at a time when it was illegal to give property to blacks. Both Seward and Tubman are buried in the same cemetery in Auburn, NY with Tubman being one of first blacks allowed burial in once segregated cemetery and buried with full military honors.

4. Seward was Governor of New York and a strong abolitionist. Seward ran against Abraham Lincoln for President, lost but was appointed Secretary of State.

5. Seward wrote Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln added addendums but is often and errantly credited as its author.

6. The day after Seward's attempted assassination and Lincoln's assassination by degenerate Confederates was the day non-whites were to be granted full civil rights, to be signed by Lincoln. Lincoln's successor, Johnson, was sympathetic to southern slave owners. After FOUR YEARS OF WAR with over 650,000 lives lost and Lincoln's death, Johnson immediately reversed all of General William T. Sherman's final victories and restored land and full rights and citizenship to Confederates (who were ousted from the Union), and allowed Confederate Nathan Bedford Forrest's Ku Klux Klan to run this country from 1865 until 1986 (their last public hanging).

7. Seward's son, William H. Seward, Jr. was also a Brigadier General in Union Army and fought in the Civil War, only to see his father and the Union Army's efforts undone by Lincoln's successor, Johnson. wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Henry_Seward,_Jr.

Seward's political party has gravely changed with Dixiecrats-white separatists fully taking over GOP after Democrat President Lyndon Johnson passed both Civil Rights (1964) and Voting Acts (1965), but Seward will always be a reminder of that grave and destructive change, and that we can and should always strive to do better for all, not just for a "selected few".

May William H. Seward and family rest in peace and never be forgotten.

www.sewardhouse.org

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_H._Seward

Military Gold Star Mom using grief to comfortably spew venom in and around military

:o To my surprise, the hate and extremism on twitter is coming from a vile, anti-government, extremist Gold Star mom (@KnottieNature), using grief for sympathy and camaraderie while spewing hate & venom about: poor, those on welfare (which includes our military), liberals, Democrats, gays, muslims, non-whites and anything she doesn't feel fits into her world, yet all exist within our military.

Angelia Phillips (@KnottieNature) represents everything that is wrong with this country right now: hatred, misguided beliefs, misinformation treated as facts or the gospel of God, selfishness, greed, racism, and more. Many of her views and words are identical to Tim McVeigh's, but we're told to respect her because she lost a son in war. Respect the son who sacrificed, first and foremost.

Apparently, Angelia Phillips, vile, racist and all, is to be placed on a pedestal to be revered by all, however, there are other military parents/families who have lost loved ones or military families in general that are trashed immediately by her and her kind if they're liberal, Democrat, non-white, poor, etc. See one example captured below. :o

Her or any other military Gold Star Mom's loss is honored. But it is impossible to link a vile, deceptive person to someone who should be honored and revered. It is her choice how she wants to carry on her son's memory, but it's not the taxpayer's choice or role to fund extremism in or in association with our military.

Extremist Tim McVeigh's mother is also a military mom. Although her son didn't die in war, he is dead. I'm sure Tim McVeigh's mom grieved, and had to grieve privately because of her son's actions, but she ironically is not spewing Tim McVeigh-style hatred and vile 24/7 within and around our military like Angelia Phillips does in the name of her fallen son.

Since when does the death of someone make Hitler-style beliefs and rhetoric acceptable, the same rhetoric of Angelia Phillips? She puts on a fake persona while associating with the most vile persons, persons who completely misrepresent our military AND constitution (against rights of others they DON'T accept), and persons she dispenses to do her dirty work for her AFTER she's made a point and her point was not accepted as valid, reasonable or sane, while she in turn, plays a "saint", "oh poor me" role. It's definitely working for her and she has perfected it well.

The persons Angelia holds with utmost admiration are Andrew Breitbart (and she even believes whole-heartedly that Shirley Sherrod is an actual racist, DESPITE INDISPUTABLE FACTS), Ann Coulter (vile), Glenn Beck (vile extremist who defends Nazis and confederates who fought against our soldiers), Sarah Palin (extremist) and other most vile and misguided persons in the public eye.

In step with her is @BostonMaggie, an official U.S. Navy blogger. Her new role to represent the Navy as a milblogger was announced by the official Twitter account of the U.S. Navy. I was horrified by this announcement after seeing her "I Am The Mob", pro-Glenn Beck profile, and retweets of @GregWHoward and far-right extremists. I unfollowed her as fast as I could. My first thought was: and this person represents the diverse Navy? I would later learn I wasn't the only one who felt this way, including several new Navy recruits.

Along with @BostonMaggie is a "supposed" military contractor, Maggie LeClerc (@ME_LECLERC1776, @ME_LECLERC), with an awful amount of time to tweet and who feels President Barack Obama is a tyrant and is taking away her cushy, military contractor, high-pay lifestyle with more perks than corporate workers, INCLUDING DISCOUNTS. Poor her, to be in her shoes right now, geesh. I wouldn't have one single complaint, so I have ZERO sympathy for her.

All of these persons supposedly represent the best interest of the military, speak on behalf of it with self-imposed authority, yet personally associate with ALL of the most vile tweeters on twitter and persons offline. They're "affectionately" known as "right-wing nut jobs". One is proud that he's an extremist, it is actually his characteristic he is MOST proud of and his only characteristic. Another of their associates linked directly from @BostonMaggie's blog defended the Hutaree militia group recently arrested.

Vile persons are embraced, befriended and consoled by them. The convenient excuse by @BostonMaggie who adores persons like @TPO_Hisself (publicly called Michelle Obama a whore and it was RT'd repeatedly) and @GregWHoward: it's just free speech. Yet, the persons they associate with personally stalk and monitor persons who have different speech than their redundant anti-Obama rhetoric, and take personal delight and "patriotic" pride in hunting persons, including military, who are assumed liberal, Democrat, poor, pro-Obama, gay or anything they don't accept as "their norm" and attack repeatedly and viciously to the joyful delight and watch of @BostonMaggie and Angelia Phillips, a military family representative.

How can I believe that the best interest of the poor, those on welfare in the military, gays, liberals, Democrats, muslims and non-blacks within military will be treated fairly when the above persons are full of hate and misguided rage towards them?

The first words out of their mouth to me as advice about extreme speech was to "direct" me to accept vile speech as ""just free speech" and to EMBRACE them, regardless of their ethics or lack thereof. Then, after not agreeing, the same point was "yelled" to me by Angelia Phillips like a child being "scolded" to do as she says and NOT question her flawed words. Sure, right after I embrace the Ku Klux Klan which speaks the same words as Angelia, @BostonMaggie with @GregWHoward and @TPO_Hisself and their "associates", which is a classy way of saying "other degenerates".

Angelia, Maggie LeClerc, @BostonMaggie and the majority of their "comrads" are dishonest, wouldn't know a fact if it introduced itself with a note from Jesus, and are delusional and completely paranoid about pretty much EVERYTHING especially government yet cling to government for dear life. Their "logical" thought process is to "assume" and "accuse" first which is beyond dangerous and leads to conflict wherever their trail leads to. If you ask either of them what happened about ANYTHING, they'll tell you their opinion and swear it was a fact, but never take the time to gather facts.

I prefer to "get to know" first, THEN make a judgment after I have obtained all the facts. Hearsay means nothing to me. And all of the above have certainly given me enough facts and evidence to backup this info.

Is this the process for other military members: to put up with nonsense like that just to do their job? Seems like an incredible waste of taxpayer dollars: playing personal games with lives of valuable defense resources. And it's also unfortunate with all of the positive representations of military I know that I would see such an extreme and vile opposite group representing military in any capacity.

The consistent feedback I receive about @BostonMaggie and Angelia Phillips: unbending, uncompromising, raging and misguided. But persons have to somehow put up with their nonsense for military "cohesion". Huh? Put up with uncompromising hatriots to get along with them?? In what world? You don't bend to hate. You move around or leave hate where it's standing with complete disapproval and if it's gone when you come back, you'll know you've made a difference instead of becoming a part of the problem.

Our military is NOT a whites-only, private, conservative, country club, but is a taxpayer funded defense organization. Persons should be able to do their jobs and the only concern of @BostonMaggie and Angelia Phillips should be that the best person(s) for the military job is obtained and not denied, blocked, harassed, ostracized and more because of THEIR personal beliefs which have nothing to do with our taxpayer funded military.

Seeing their negative playground behavior explains the high amount of racism, sexism and fear of others within the military. Truly sad. But somehow through their nonsense, rising DIVERSE stars are able to shine and remind you of all the biased crap they had to put up with to accomplish incredibly amazing tasks, especially Jose M. Hernandez, Dori Miller, the Tuskegee Airmen, certain women such as Harriet Tubman, who fought with our Union soldiers for this country and was buried with military honors, Dr. Mary E. Walker (more info...), and countless other persons who would be silenced easily by the likes of Angelia Phillips, @BostonMaggie, @GregWHoward, @TPO_Hisself and their friends if person(s) didn't fall inline with their extremism.

Examples of direct associations of Angelia Phillips, Maggie LeClerc and @BostonMaggie. And these are just some of the unsolicited gems:

http://twitter.com/JustPlainBill/status/19883421179
http://lockerz.com/s/35711125 | http://tweetphoto.com/35711125

I think after a bomb threat, you deserve ANYTHING I feel like telling you after that point. just sayin'. but apparently this threat was to make me bow down to Angelia, but it only confirmed she keeps extremely vile company. as to why their twitter account has been allowed to remain active after a clear violation of terms of service (reported three times) is a mystery.

http://twitter.com/JustPlainBill/status/19883805725
http://lockerz.com/s/35711364 | http://tweetphoto.com/35711364
what's tragically funny is the assumption and advice that I should be taking mental health drugs while they're sending terroristic bomb threats.

http://twitter.com/JustPlainBill/status/19883829559
http://lockerz.com/s/35711528 | http://tweetphoto.com/35711528

http://twitter.com/JustPlainBill/status/19883969380
http://lockerz.com/s/35711619 | http://tweetphoto.com/35711619

another hatriot "treasure": http://yfrog.com/n2mbq01j http://twitter.com/CJF_Fontenot/status/ ... 7257297763 - note his U.S. Navy tee worn in avatar pic. I'm staring at one side of the military which is humble, amazing and tolerant - the ones around me who caught my attention and gained immediate admiration long before it was "trendy" to support the troops, while looking at the other vile side of it which wants to claim complete ownership of our United States military. :o

DADT and Call Me Liberal One More Time!

the long-ass version :|

Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT)

World War II War Department addressing segregation within the military:
The policy of the war department is not to intermingle colored and white enlisted personnel in the same regimental organizations. This policy has proved satisfactory over a long period of years and to make changes now would be destructive to morale.

Now, skip to 2010... don't those words from 1944 above sound AWFULLY like words spoken today about having gays serve openly in military in THIS country?? :o It seems other countries don't have a problem with gays in their military. But U.S. is Number 1 in fear-mongering and hate propaganda while boasting that we are a free democratic society that other countries envy. With our current policy, which other countries envy us? Iran? Iraq? Afghanistan? North Korea? Or our bankers: Saudi Arabia or China? :o I think our bankers just care that we don't miss a payment. :|

Our coalition forces fighting along side us in both Iraq and Afghanistan have gays openly serving in THEIR military. So are we trying to make progressive countries of our coalition forces envious of our fear-mongering of the same people treated with respect in their country??

Related: Opinions critical to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" review www.army.mil/-news/2010/06/04/40341-opinions-critical-to-dont-ask-dont-tell-review/index.html

Call Me Liberal One More Time!!

First, it's interesting that hatriots on twitter are quick to throw out the Nazi-like cry "liberal" when you don't agree with their behavior towards others. Apparently, LOUD, rude, publicly discriminating, insulting, ignorant of facts, demeaning, finger-pointing with errors, and insistent labeling of something diverse as negative are all now part of the new definition of "conservative". Yup, preserve that good 'ol hatred which failed so well!

But if liberal means I'm opposite of the hatriot patrol, I'll HAPPILY accept the label! :) Because if liberal-label means I'm not rounding up folks to put then in a convenient and stifling hatriot box, THEN CALL ME LIBERAL ONE MORE TIME PLEASE! And thank you very friggin' much! ;)

Funny, when I think of conservative, I think of persons like Colin Powell, Laura W. Bush and even Abraham Lincoln. Thus, when I see the loud, imposing rage on the far right and with audacity to use "conservative" label in their profile, I have to laugh. I actually had to look up the dictionary term for the words "conservative" and "christian", then looked up the political meaning because, so far, neither person proudly using "conservative" or "conservative christian" label in their profile exhibited either definition or would explain their meaning directly. I don't want to assume, I want to know.

Definition of Christian, so the confusion and hypocrisy is clear:

-adjective
1. of, pertaining to, or derived from Jesus Christ or His teachings: a Christian faith.

2. of, pertaining to, believing in, or belonging to the religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

3. of or pertaining to Christians: many Christian deaths in the Crusades.

4. exhibiting a spirit proper to a follower of Jesus Christ; Christlike: She displayed true Christian charity.

5. decent; respectable: They gave him a good Christian burial.

6. human; not brutal; humane: Such behavior isn't Christian. [see twitter.com/tpo_hisself's tweets. He's the Hatriot Leader.]

-noun
7. a person who believes in Jesus Christ; adherent of Christianity.

8. a person who exemplifies in his or her life the teachings of Christ: He died like a true Christian.

9. a member of any of certain Protestant churches, as the Disciples of Christ and the Plymouth Brethren.

10. the hero of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress.:o

11. a male given name.

Does the above definition resemble a member of today's GOP, a hatriot or member of a hate-based group to you?? Maybe #11 would be applicable.

Definition of conservative:

-adjective
1. disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.

2. cautiously moderate or purposefully low: a conservative estimate.

3. traditional in style or manner; avoiding novelty or showiness: conservative suit.

4. of or pertaining to the Conservative party.

5. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of Conservative Jews or Conservative Judaism.

6. having the power or tendency to conserve; preservative.

7. Mathematics (of a vector or vector function) having curl equal to zero; irrotational; lamellar.

-noun
8. a person who is conservative in principles, actions, habits, etc.

9. a supporter of conservative political policies.

10. a member of a conservative political party, esp. the Conservative party in Great Britain [which differs greatly from U.S. conservative party!!].

11. a preservative.

#1 above sure sounds like Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh: to preserve EPIC FAILURES on each and every level and limit change of those failures. Their plan: let's stay in the stone ages and follow one idiotic person who feels we should all follow ONE lifestyle and political choice instead of working TOGETHER across personal and political beliefs to build a stronger nation which benefits us wholy, instead of creating an US against OUR OWN mentality. (See President Obama's administration which resembles the makeup of our country instead of Sons of Confederate Veterans or Daughters of the Confederacy)

We are not at war with our own country. But Palin, Beck & Limbaugh have certainly declared war on our own citizens as if they were the FOUNDERS and deciders of OUR nation, something all of them combined have limited and distorted knowledge about. And ALL three of them are Jim Crow immigrants, their ancestry is not anywhere linked to the slave trade "founding fathers".

But #2 neither Palin, Beck or Limbaugh are NOT, nothing moderate or cautious about either.

Funny thing is after looking up definitions, neither description stated they were REQUIRED or PREFERRED lifestyles, but both are "choices" or options. And neither are listed as REQUIREMENTS in our Constitution which the same persons proudly using label(s) are so quick to throw out to justify their "label, divide and conquer 24/7" goal. Their choice of lifestyle is a FREE WILL option but choices for other lifestyles (political party, sexual preference and more) are not, and some choices are even outlawed for their happiness no matter how miserable it makes other persons or affects other persons' liberty and pursuit of happiness. Ironically, if any of their "perceived" rights are outlawed or "tampered with", all hell breaks loose (see any 2nd Amendment gripes).

The liberal cries towards me not only make me laugh, but further confirm hatriots like to keep their hate simple: label everyone falsely and in masses to prevent gathering of facts (because intelligence, get to know, and humanity is required - too much work).

But here are other shocking funnies:

1. I'm catholic, which is one of the more conservative religions, but mostly in name only as there's always a loophole around "guidelines" such as remarrying after divorce, abortion, and apparently even child rape and abuse given sex abuse scandal!

And I'm not just a catholic by name, but a regular attendee. I don't attend church regularly because I want a person to tell me what to think or say. I don't attend to socialize and find a buddy who thinks JUST LIKE ME. I attend for readings of Gospels (focus), communion and to remind me of Christ and God. My priest doesn't preach ANYTHING about "we must not associate with these types of people" or discuss which sin is THE sin. We all sin and ALL fall short of God and Christ's perfection. We ask for forgiveness and start service by confessing we have NOT been perfect, and try to humble ourselves before God AND Christ - NOT MAN! Man is ALWAYS fallible. The sooner people realize that, the sooner people would stop making MAN a church or person to worship, which has been the downfall of many politicians, groups or even cults (Jim Jones, Warren Jeffs, and the like). And I don't lump all priests into the sex abuse scandal. That would be no different than hatriots or hate-based groups grouping people into one category. There are bad people in every profession!

2. I'm a Republican at heart but had to leave my party because confederates have now infected the GOP beyond repair, thus the disconnect and all the hatriots embarrassing the party beyond recognition. William Seward is turning in his grave!

I believe in the original, diverse and progressive Republican party. The biggest change in the past 40-years: parties have switched sides. "Republicans but don't know it yet" are now Democrats, and the new GOP is comprised of Jim Crow benefactors who switched parties after passage of Voting and Civil Rights Act and their descendants who don't even know why they're Republican but just that they are to say NO to everything after exploiting the hell out of our country and crippling our country with stifling hatred while holding onto pride in heritage from THEIR original country while denying rights to others.

3. I would never have an abortion, but that's MY choice. [Correction: I would if the child's life was at severe health risk before or after birth, or both our lives were at risk during pregnancy. However, if both lives at risk, I'd rather the child lives instead of me.]

I'm not God for others, especially a woman who has been raped or whose life is at risk. God is better at being God. I'm not the DECIDER for someone else's heart or body, or choices. Accepting responsibility for my own actions is a full-time job.

People who have time to pre-worry about choices of others they have never met, nor would care about in general, clearly are blessed with plenty of time and assets and all their personal affairs are in perfect order, as in they're ready to die, because ALL is taken care of. No last minute bucket-list items. Just time to sit on their high-horse and wait for their memorable, "please make it Pay-Per-View" meeting with God.

And for those so passionate about abortion or call themselves "pro-life", I hope they're regularly donating to foster care centers (or visiting Darfur where genocide is in progress). But please leave the child alone as there would be less problems with controlling freaks (like Scott Roeder) adopting a child who's already been abused, mistreated or neglected. Just send money to make sure the non-aborted child has EVERYTHING he or she needs.

4. I don't hate guns or want to ban them. I actually like them! BUT NOT EVERYONE HAS TO FEEL THE SAME WAY, or grew up in a hunting paradise state. And not everyone understands responsible gun ownership.

Our license plates in Louisiana: Sportsman's Paradise. In many areas, hunting and fishing was the ONLY way to eat, or it's a way to save a lot of money on groceries.

As an adult at age 21, I purchased my first gun; it was a choice for safety as a single woman. I walked right into a local California gun store and purchased the cutest gun (ok, you know women and shopping, give us colors and options, and it could be a week-long event!). I didn't brag that I had it, or show it off (like this proud hatriot does: http://twitter.com/Reimagin - ridiculous!). I simply put it in a safe place where only I knew where it was and where it was within easy reach. When I later wanted to upgrade to something else, I simply turned in gun to same store and got something else. My gun was a sense of security, even if false security, because nothing would stop a serial killer or a shooter on the street unless you know firsthand about the attack and were well-armed to prevent it.

5. I don't sleep around, but know many who do - no I cannot give you the hookup! ;) I don't judge them because it's THEIR life, not mine. I don't think teens should be screwing around like Bristol Palin (there was zero love involved as evident by the immediate bickering after McCain/Palin lost), it was just sex and both she and Levi Johnston were busted globally). I don't think teen girls should dress like hookers in training especially because this invites avoidable problems. But there isn't anything I can do about it, it's their choice and I'm not their parent.

I don't make friends based upon their lifestyle, but I do avoid people with hateful lifestyles because it means they're miserable with unresolved issues and self-hate. I was also never taught to hate others, in spite of my own mother and other family members (black or white) experiencing horrific conditions during Jim Crow AS TAXPAYERS, BUSINESS OWNERS and HOMEOWNERS.

My closest friends are black, white (Jewish, German, Dutch, Italian, British, Polish, Russian), Native American, Asian, Spanish and Persian. They're straight, gay, married, single, divorced, with and without kids. Although I've never met anyone gay within my own family, I'm sure one exists or we'd be the very first family ever. :o They're all unique people who don't spend their time promoting hatred against others or imposing their way of life onto others. They simply live and enjoy life and have a great deal of compassion for others around them, including people they don't even know. All also WORK with a diverse group of people, people they're not concerned about the personal lifestyles of because none of that matters to get a job done.

For a while, I never thought about gay marriage or gay lifestyles, even though a long-time close friend is gay. I just saw a person with integrity, intelligence and the humor I needed at the right times who lived a life of HIS choice. The things we discussed had nothing to do with his lifestyle, but about life in general, the same things everyone else talks about.

Ironically, many years ago, it angered me when protests began with "our gay rights struggle is just like the black civil rights struggle". My first thought was "wait, when I walk into a room, it's clear I'm black, you have the option of not letting anyone know you are or aren't gay." I didn't know my soon to be best friend was gay, I didn't ask and when I found out, I didn't care because he was the same person I met who goes home to his family at the end of the day.

I also don't walk into a room and say, I'm heterosexual. But for persons openly or clearly gay, I saw employment discrimination - person, although qualified, was called too gay for a visible position which was stated by one manager who would ironically move on to defraud one company after another. Ironically, the same "too something" comment was stated by several white managers about non-white employees or physically disabled which outraged me as well. Physically disabled (person was in wheelchair) for a software engineering desk job, and the building by California law had to be handicap-equipped in all areas??!! And same person discriminated against worked previously in same role for Apple which didn't discriminate.

I also remember a co-worker at Palm Computing placing his gay pride flag on his desk along side his doll of Pee Wee Herman with the doll's hand conveniently placed into its crotch, and he had just been hired. I thought, "Okay" and kept it moving. Being from New Orleans, I've seen a lot more openness than that during Mardi Gras, but that was a job first. I didn't stage a protest, and neither did anyone else.

Then I wondered, what would happen if I placed a poster of Dr. King, Medgar Evers or Malcolm X onto my office wall? I knew someone would have complained without knowing factual details about either, especially the creep who always popped in to ask me something stereotyped about blacks using his "Ebonics" voice, which was supposed to make me feel comfortable but made me cringe especially since I didn't speak Ebonics! I always received the "Negro Files" questions or comments which would go in one ear and out the other. Working directly with a Ku Klux Klansman as a teen, I learned stereotyped nonsense can only be undone by unlearning, and if person is not willing to listen, F 'em and move on to greener pastures, more productive time things.

I'm sure someone would have a problem with me using "black" for race, which is often corrected directly in front of me. But this speaks directly to false labeling. My FIRST heritage is Native American, my 2nd heritage is white from 1600s pre-slavery settlers, my 3rd or 4th (if I separate Dutch and British) and so-on less dominant heritage on non-white/non-native side is comprised of African, French and Spanish from forced British-French-Spanish slave trade (1699 until 1865) which outlawed every non-white face and forced many Indians and free Africans against each other while forcing every available "free before you got here" brown face into slavery and more with help from U.S. Congress with not one but TWO fugitive slave acts.

I know little about Africa, France or Spanish countries other than their location. The faces I see in my family: white and brown with strong Native Indian features, and there have been past generation and recent marriages to other nationalities (Japanese, Vietnamese, Spanish) which doesn't make them African-American either.

To place me into an African-American box is somewhat insulting to me. African-American is a positive label for DIRECT descendants of African slaves, but my heritage precedes that label and the label nullifies the existence of my more dominant family which existed long BEFORE slavery and hatriotism. I'd use "Other" for "need to know" stats, but people don't see OTHER first, I'm immediately labeled: African-American without even asking me. Thus, my use of "black", or "Negro" when joking which is what any brown face prior to mid-1980s would have been labeled anyway, or still is by Confederates.

In the New York City area, the most common question: what country am I from? THIS ONE!!! It's assumed, especially by whites from Midwest areas and Jamaicans, that all brown faces in the NYC area migrated from another country because only whites lived here first. :o Somehow my country has become "their" (whites) country and my country didn't exist until their family migrated here during Jim Crow and fought in a war. Newsflash: white immigrants during Jim Crow and their offspring are not the only persons who have fought for this country! And EVERY nationality fought in World War II or helped in one way or another. Ironically, WWII was not over oil deals gone bad or material possessions, but to stop hatred which ironically is rising quickly again.

I don't see conservative, liberal, independent, straight or gay labels first. I see hearts first, followed by the actions of a person's heart. If their thoughts and words are hate-based or non-fact based or their words are inconsistent with their actions, the person is deceptive and/or destructive and, therefore, a waste of my time. And that implies to anyone of any race, religion or lifestyle as I've met white, black/African-American, gay, Jewish, Muslim, Asian and Spanish hatriots. Hatriotism knows no one specific race or lifestyle, it needs anyone too lazy to gather facts or someone with insecurities.

Regarding Gays In Our Military and Their Rights...

I never thought about it until after 9/11 which forced many of our military into war for the first time, separating them from their family and loved ones. I'd also randomly discover many great military leaders: Leonard Matlovich, Harvey Milk, Lt. Dan Choi, Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach and a host of other generals and military members from ALL ranks who not only did their job, but did their jobs with grace and dignity which would make anyone proud. And doing their jobs while having to stay in the background and/or keep their personal lives separate from others, while others were allowed to put their entire personal lives on display publicly and professionally (nasty divorces, breakups, affairs, etc.). This reminded me of Tuskegee Airmen who were military officers yet were discriminated against and isolated PUBLICLY within the military. The lives of Tuskegee Airmen officers were separate and UNEQUAL to whites and even considered lesser than lower-ranked military members.

Right now the common complaint about gays in military: allowing them to be honest and openly serve will change the culture. Again, same "change the culture" thing said about non-whites and women in military and at military academies. It's 2010. While other countries have moved past race and gender, we're stuck in Flintstones past, dragging our feet with ignorant pride to everything.

What's ironic is the attitude towards gays in military in U.S. is similar to the ignorance of Iran's Ahmadinejad: we don't have gays in my country. He pretends they don't exist. Now, explain which countries hate our way of life, given our hatriots are STILL dictating this country Jim Crow style, with many of the same CONSERVATIVE values as Ahmadinejad, Osama Bin-Hidin, and all the persons we're ironically at war with, including Dick Cheney? :p

The other common word thrown out when discussing opposition to gays serving openly in our military: christianity or christian. Interesting given nothing holy or christian about bombing the shit out of another country or getting bombed by others, and displacing children and uninvolved families in the process. Missiles or bombs (unless racially motivated) don't hit the non-gay or christian people first - they don't discriminate as evident by the diversity of deaths on 9/11 and since the start of war.

God gives free will and INFINITE mercy, even to racists. Why can't people, especially those who have audacity to use Christ's name, show same mercy and compassion to what God and Christ cherish more than ANYTHING on earth: people?! The only being who feels the need to toss someone NOT useful to them: the devil. You either serve its hateful cause or it has no use for you and seeks to destroy for one reason only - because you're NOT a part of its plans and goal. Whereas God will always have room and infinite love for each and every person, whether they love God or not, or follow God's commandments. God even had compassion for Satan which God could easily destroy.

Even if you're not religious, what gives one group of lifestyle choice the idea that they KNOW what lifestyle is best for everyone? Is that in the U.S. Constitution? If so, WHERE? Show it to me?! Each person is different for a reason. However, I even heard one hatriot say: "see God wants us all to be the same", while ironically befriending people who want to destroy ANYONE not like them, including @TPO_Hisself. Yeah, so God scattered everyone, changed languages and selected a chosen group (later punished - Deut. 28) to later sit above all others as a GUIDE, not a TO DO?

If you're going to play the God-card, you know what God wants? The same thing everyone else does: EQUAL RESPECT, love and a little acknowledgment. A simple "thank you" would be a great start! God doesn't ask for much but GIVES a whole lot in return. God doesn't approach anyone with a hate-based agenda either. The cast out one does!

Even atheists have more compassion than persons running around calling themselves "conservative" or "christian". Maybe it's because atheists spend more time learning (which combats ignorance) than following blindly along with a group that doesn't even understand know Christ or God while claiming to be of any related religion.

Why the Conservatives are Exploiting and Attacking our Military

Jonathan Powers and Rob Diamond: Why the Conservatives are Exploiting and Attacking our Military

Sandra Bullock is not the only person in the midst of an ugly break-up these days. For decades, conservatives have prided themselves for their devotion to the armed services. Yet, in recent months, the right has gotten mean in its attacks on our military leadership and is even exploiting our troops. And it is playing out on reality television right in front of us--except it's on CSPAN and not MTV.

As veterans of America's current wars, it is deeply disconcerting for us to watch conservatives hurl reckless vitriol at our military leadership and now the constitution which we swore to defend. While public servants such as Admiral Mike Mullen, General David Petraeus and Defense Secretary Bob Gates work to progress policy that will make our nation safer, conservatives have taken them to task, preferring sound-bites to sound policy.

But don't take our word for it. Just look to conservatives themselves.

GREAT ARTICLE!! and I loved that it was written by MILITARY VETERANS. only thing missing is General Paul Eaton - a national security adviser vs. praise for Cheney and Rove, or as I call them, the Dynamic Draft Dodging Duo.

being on twitter I was shocked to hear directly that military is a conservative organization, and because of my twitter username/site (@ilovemytroops) for a YEAR STRAIGHT (I kid you not, over 500 people blocked + 350+ noted), hatriots have advised me POINT BLANK: I cannot support or love our military if I don't hate Obama (screen shot & blogged it because I couldn't believe it), don't love Cheney or Rove (Dynamic Draft Dodging Duo), etc.

I was actually called SICK for not liking Cheney. THAT was a badge of honor. ALL of the military persons I know and have met have been from all walks of life and lifestyles, and they have inspired, motivated and kept me going when I wanted to give up many times.

I only wish I had followed through and joined, then maybe the tone wouldn't be so oppressive in certain areas. Creating a one-way-or-no-way tone doesn't allow a supportive environment for ALL troops and is probably one of the reasons for the high suicide rates - if persons can't be accepted, how can they be supported OPENLY and with true concern for life.

hatriots are trying to keep the military in the tone of segregated 1940s and earlier, and truly believe white conservatives and those w/their "excluding values" are the only ones who have ever fought and died for this country.

history begs to differ: Leonard Matlovich, Harvey Milk, Medgar Evers, ALL of the Tuskegee Airmen, Dr. Mary E. Walker (1st AND only woman to receive Congressional Medal of Honor, abolitionist, women's suffrage movement, health care, and more), and so many others including family and friends who have recently died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

AllAmericanDirect.com - Laptops for Flat Tops contest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AllAmericanDirect.com announces two winners in the final 'Laptops for Flat Tops' contest

Two military families to win laptop and Webcams based on powerful essays; Technology prize will help families stay in touch with their soldiers

INDIANAPOLIS (January 5, 2010) AllAmericanDirect.com, a leading e-commerce provider of consumer goods and services, today announces the winners of the Laptops for Flat Tops contest, the company's fourth and final contest for the families of military men and women currently serving overseas. Alyssa Mineo of Westlake Village, Calif. and Cara Farmer of Norfolk, Va. have each been chosen to receive a laptop with an embedded Webcam (for their families) and an additional Webcam (for their soldiers).

Three judges selected Mineo and Farmer's essays based on their powerful descriptions of how their families have been affected by having a loved one serving overseas and how a laptop and Webcam would improve communication with their loved one. The judges are Col. (Ret.) Dale A. Kissinger, Scott Davis and Jenna Richards.

Alyssa Mineo is the wife of CPL Kevin Mineo of the United States Marine Corps, who is on his fifth deployment and currently stationed in Afghanistan. This deployment will be exceptionally hard for the Mineo family, as Alyssa is eight months pregnant with their second child due on Jan. 31. They are expecting a baby boy and intend to name him Wyatt. Alyssa and Kevin have a four year old daughter named Faith, and both mother and daughter reside in Westlake Village, Calif.

"I feel very blessed to have been chosen as a winner," says Alyssa Mineo. "It means a great deal to me, especially with this deployment because my husband will not be around for the birth of our second child, our first boy. Thanks to having access to a laptop and webcam, I am anticipating that he will be able to 'see' his son instead of receiving pictures a month later. Our four year old daughter is old enough for this deployment to realize how long her Daddy has been gone, and she will be so excited to see her Daddy via webcam. Thank you so much for this opportunity."

Cara Farmer is the wife of BM2 David W. Farmer, Jr. of the United States Navy, who has been deployed on his second tour of duty in Iraq in June 2009. David and Cara have three children, Destiny, age 7; James, age 5; and Taya, age 3. Cara and the children live in Norfolk, Va.

"I am very grateful for the laptop and Web cams," says Cara Farmer. "With David leaving for his second deployment to Iraq, this laptop couldn't have come at a better time. My children and I now have a better way to communicate with their father that goes above the traditional phone calls and emails. Thank you, AllAmericanDirect.com!"

This was the fourth and final Laptops for Flat Tops contest. These were a series of four bi-monthly contests designed as a way for AllAmericanDirect.com to say thank you to the families of military men and women. During the past four contests, eight families have been awarded this prize package.

"On behalf of AllAmericanDirect.com, we would like to personally thank every spouse, father, mother, brother, sister, son and daughter who participated in this contest," said Mike Mountford, CEO of AllAmericanDirect.com. "And we would like to salute each member of the United States Military for their dedication to serving and protecting our country. These two deserving winners will now be able to interact and communicate with their loved ones on a higher, more interactive level than a phone call, while they are away from their homes."

Further information on AllAmericanDirect.com's products and services is available online at http://www.allamericandirect.com/?cid=400604.
-###-

About AllAmericanDirect.com
AllAmericanDirect.com is a leading online retailer of consumer goods and services, founded in 1983 and acquired in April 2003 by Michael R.
Nidal Hasan, he has more excuses than someone about to go to jail! Wait, he is going to prison!

NON-PC LANGUAGE WARNING AHEAD OF TIME!!! CLICK AWAY NOW FOR YOUR BEST INTEREST!!! :(

I need to vent, rather here than other ways! :(

I refuse to refer to Nidal Hasan as "Major". He lost that title the day he decided to kill and wound military staff and civilians. Only thing major about him is he's a major piece of shit!

:o OK, I've heard "Nidal Hasan was harassed on the job". Bullshit! There are kids who work at McDonald's who handle on the job harassment 100% better, some even come out owning the fucking franchise. And on top of that, Hasan is a military officer - as in employed by the government in a high level position, therefore, he more than knew how to handle any ACTUAL harassment, enough to come out paid and comfortable for the rest of his life so he wouldn't ever have to fight anyone, except w/a lawyer for personal affairs.

Then I heard he was conflicted because of his religious beliefs. AND then this stupid motherfucker had the audacity to state upon regaining consciousness: Muslims shouldn't be trained to fight. Did Muslim extremists not get that fucking memo? WTF?! Lemme go back to the should not be trained to fight: WHAT THE FUCK did he think the tanks, M16s, glocks, cannons, laser technology, fighter jets, assault vehicles, armed carrier ships and other equipment of the ARMED FORCES were for? FUCKING DECORATIONS?! For shits and giggles?!?! When Hasan was training with either of the weapons and/or equipment, did he think the military was just fucking with him, and had ZERO intention of using either in POST-9/11 world while in the middle of two fucking wars??

Ok first problem, you're harassed on the job as a psychiatrist. :o HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL? <=THAT should have been his first fucking question!!!!! But instead he PLANS to kill innocent people to resolve his problem. Where'd he get his degree from? A FUCKING CRACKER JACK BOX, but only after buying about 50,000 boxes and the sugar damaged his brain (Twinkie Defense)?

Oh then there's the claim that he's conflicted about his religion because he was being deployed. (But this stupid mofo wasn't conflicted about the paycheck he collected from the MILITARY on a regular basis, huh?) Sooooo his conflict of interest leads the mother&#@(!% sommabish to contact a known jihadist, 20 times. :o THERE WAS NO CONFLICT ABOUT THAT SHIT! He knew who he was contacting and why. If I want to start a race war, I'm on the phone with David Duke, a fucking expert. I don't call Mickey Mouse or Barney The Dinosaur and say, "I'm conflicted, and I wanna set shit off"!

So days before his rampage, he decides to give away personal items, make calls and final arrangements. No one thought much of it because he was being deployed.

Now the day of the shooting, O. M. G. :o :o If only I had one power right now: go back and freeze time to an hour before. Hasan, as a psychiatrist, has witnessed what our troops are experiencing daily. Don't they have enough to worry about, enough that Hasan KNEW ABOUT THOROUGHLY??!! But he decides to inflict more pain on our military, military families and the nation as a whole, and also more pain w/in Muslim communities across the world who ARE NOT PLANNING ATTACKS ON OTHERS to resolve their self-created issues, but now have to deal w/ the backlash of Hasan's actions.

I can't process Hasan's actions as anything but a predatory attack. He wasn't stressed. I'm fucking stressed! He had options. I have minimal options now and some days WAIT to die. But on my worst day, I'm not thinking about anything even in the same fucking ballpark, hell, sport or universe as this jackass.

And he's alive. DAMN! And talking shit! Hasan isn't even trying to divulge what he knows about Al Qaeda to help US out. And he thinks we are bad and wants to express his views as if we pushed him to it?! He's alive, getting medical treatment and protected by a lawyer WITH PAY, while 34+ families' lives have been damaged permanently. I've heard no fucking remorse, apology or grief from his voice, not that I would give a shit, but it would show that he gave a shit about humanity.

Hasan should have killed himself and left a note which stated something like: I love my country but I'm a confused coward and don't want to embarrass the country I love. Then maybe I would have had some sympathy for him. Right now, zero. In fact, CAN I pull the switch, if he's ever executed (which ironically, he won't ever be)?!

So far, I've heard NOTHING about how he loved this country, his people, the military or defending THIS country from all enemies foreign and domestic. He was more concerned about protecting his religious beliefs w/a paycheck from us for his comforts.

I've heard a lot of talk about persons being "P.C." (politically correct) and afraid to voice concerns about Hasan. Hm…non-P.C. vs. 14 people (including unborn child) who would be alive plus 31+ not in the hospital suffering from injuries and issues surrounding those injuries. It's called instincts, the only thing you're born and you die with! I'd rather find out I'm wrong and say "hey sorry, I didn't know what to think because of this FUCKING LIST: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ho/pubs/fs/5902.htm vs. the shit you've been saying and doing", than find out I was right while looking at a list of the dead at the hands of the person I'm concerned about.

And I'm not worried that there will be a Muslim backlash. Average person isn't that stupid. Wait, well, thinking sane people are not that stupid. If anyone is concerned about a backlash, we have white Americans planning the same type of violent nonsense against Americans: http://www.splcenter.org/news/item.jsp?aid=392. So should we round up or single out all whites with guns out of fear?

What needs to happen: if you see or suspect something, SAY something!!! If you are FOR this country AND everyone in it, better show it and say something now! Because if WHILE LIVING HERE your actions demonstrate you are against this country and its citizens because of radical beliefs (you want one type of exclusionary world and to achieve that you have to kill all others), then better hope God has mercy for you, because I sure as hell won't. In fact, FUCK YOU NOW. That's how I feel about that shit!

Return Of The Militias - they are back with a vengeance!!!

:o Remember (or don't remember if this is your first time hearing about it ;)) what I said about messages of hate black-clouding military support? Lemme catch ya up to speed: www.ilovemytroops.com/extra/index.php?entry=entry090901-115306. Hurry back, so we can finish....

Dang, what took you so long? I've already solved world peace. :| Seriously, look outside, bunnies are planting flowers and singing.

But seriously...Well, lookie here: www.splcenter.org/news/item.jsp?pid=415

The messages of rage and hatred against ANY and every thing Obama have increased significantly. These sick, twisted bastards have even gone so far as to remove the DoD, CIA and FBI from any war or terrorism planning involvement. It's THEM against Obama for ANYTHING, including stupid stuff.

Every thing that happens or is said is an excuse to rage against Obama. But LMAO at Alan Grayson, "President Obama just turns the other cheek, like a good muslim." ;) Grayson told the perfect joke, because many muslims would turn the other cheek before any fake christian (the ones who have to tell you they're christian which is not a trendy label, but a way of life and is seen by actions and words), jihadist/taliban or right-wing extremist. Fake christians claiming to be conservative, jihadists/taliban and far-right extremists are ALL the same. Only difference is time of worship, if any.

Long story short: we are FUCKED. Two wars, one in Iraq (and I believe Karl Rove detonated the bomb in Iraq yesterday, I wouldn't put shit past him, I'm just saying ;)), and one in Afghanistan, which is a waste of friggin' time given how many times that wasteland has been fought and generated nothing but death after death. AND NOW, the militias are ramping up. Bastards! Not happy here, get the fuck out :) and go back to country of origin. Problem solved: all they want is there plus no chance of seeing a brown face in charge. If I could drop kick them across the pond, I would volunteer all day long, not even take a lunch break. Just git 'er done!

Staff Sgt. Nekl B. Allen (29) - Rochester, NY

Soldier 'Loved Life and Lived It to the Fullest'

By Mark Berman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, October 9, 2009

Like so many of his peers, Nekl Allen felt compelled to serve his country after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. And joining an ever-increasing number of his fellow soldiers, Allen was buried Thursday morning at Arlington National Cemetery.

Staff Sgt. Nekl B. Allen, 29, of Rochester, N.Y., was killed Sept. 12 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, along with Spec. Daniel L. Cox, 23, of Parsons, Kan. Enemy forces attacked their vehicle with a makeshift bomb and small-arms fire, the Defense Department said.

Allen and Cox were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) based at Fort Drum, N.Y.

Allen's father-in-law said in a eulogy last month that after Allen enlisted in response to the attacks, he found service to be a good fit.

"He stepped up to serve his country because he knew it was his duty and the right thing to do," Mike Meehan told the Associated Press. "Army life agreed with him, and he reenlisted twice."

Allen, who was known as "Nicky," was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his wife, Amy, and children Christopher, 10, Michael, 7, and Grace, 5, according to the Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester.

Meehan described Allan as courteous, kind and always looking out for his troops. He said Allen "would always choose the hard right over the easy wrong."

"He loved life and lived it to the fullest," Meehan said. "It was a joy being around Nick; he had a way of making you feel special."

Allen's wife and his parents, Daniel and Debra Allen, received folded flags at Thursday's service.

Allen joined the Army in May 2002 and was on his third deployment, according to his base. He also served in Iraq.

He received several awards and decorations, including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

He was buried in Arlington's Section 60, becoming the 107th soldier from the war in Afghanistan to be buried at the cemetery and the 571st casualty from the wars there and in Iraq to be buried at Arlington.

Jonathan Brostrom reached the United States, his brigade commander was on the phone to the young officer's father in Honolulu.

"I'm so sorry," Col. Charles Preysler told retired Col. David P. Brostrom, his close friend and former colleague. He was sorry that the elder Brostrom's son was dead. He was sorry that he hadn't been able to do more to prevent it. And, although he didn't say so, he was sorry that he'd made an extra spot for Brostrom's son in his brigade. He hadn't wanted the additional burden that came with sending a good friend's son into battle, he recalled. But he also couldn't bring himself to refuse.

"At least he died fighting for a man I trust," the father replied.

As many as 200 Taliban fighters attacked Brostrom, 24, and his troops on July 13, 2008, as they were building a rudimentary outpost in Wanat, Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border. More than three-quarters of Brostrom's soldiers were killed or wounded in the battle, one of the war's deadliest.

At first, the elder Brostrom felt a sense of shame. "I was embarrassed because Jonathan was in charge," he recalled. "This ragtag Third World force had rolled over his reinforced infantry platoon."

In the weeks that followed Preysler's call, Brostrom contacted his son's soldiers, who told him about a mission that was poorly supported by senior commanders and hastily executed in the last days of a 14-month deployment. He pored over hundreds of pages of Army documents, which convinced him that his son's commanders ignored intelligence about an impending attack by hundreds of Taliban fighters. His embarrassment turned to doubt and his doubt grew to anger.

Brostrom's campaign for a new investigation of the battle has put him at odds with senior Army officials who have been deeply reluctant to second-guess their commanders. Such battlefield postmortems, these officials caution, have a chilling effect on commanders who must make life-or-death decisions with limited information. As Brostrom has confronted the possibility that Jonathan died in vain, the retired colonel also has become estranged from longtime friends who were part of his son's chain of command.

Brostrom and Preysler first served together in Hawaii at U.S. Pacific Command, where from 1999 to 2001 Brostrom was a senior war planner and Preysler worked under him. They socialized frequently outside of work, and their wives grew close. Brostrom's wife, Mary Jo, suggested that their eldest son join the 173rd Airborne, Preysler's brigade in Vicenza, Italy. "I'd rather Jonathan deploy with someone I know will take care of him," she had said.

Before he left for Afghanistan, the younger Brostrom was a frequent visitor at the Preyslers' house. He arrived in Vicenza shortly after the brigade deployed and had to complete two weeks of training before he could join his fellow soldiers. Lisa Preysler, the brigade commander's wife, cooked him dinner and helped with his laundry. "My kids adored Jonathan," her husband recalled. "They acted like he was their older brother."

Before his son's death, the elder Brostrom spoke with Preysler only once during the Afghan deployment. In January 2008, an Afghan security guard killed Jonathan Brostrom's platoon sergeant at the small outpost they were occupying in the Hindu Kush mountains. The elder Brostrom asked Preysler to check in on his son, who was responsible for running the 40-man platoon by himself until a replacement sergeant was named. "I was a concerned parent," Brostrom recalled. "I didn't know what was going on."

Preysler, whose sector included 30 small outposts, said he would try to visit. But Brostrom could tell that his friend was busy managing an increasingly violent fight. "I hate to be cold, but for Chip it was just another casualty," he recalled.

When his son was killed, Brostrom worried that the Army would not thoroughly investigate. His son's brigade was just two weeks from the end of a grueling 14-month deployment when the attack occurred. He also took it as a bad sign that Preysler and Maj. Gen. Jeffrey J. Schloesser, the top officer in eastern Afghanistan, decided to pull U.S. forces out of Wanat and the surrounding Waygal Valley in the immediate aftermath of the battle. "I know they were tired and just wanted to wrap things up," Brostrom said.

So on his own, he tried to piece together what had happened, calling some of the soldiers from his son's unit. "Did you see my son during the battle?" he would ask. "Did you see Jonathan fall?"

'You Have to Move On'

In early October, Brostrom asked Preysler to fly to Honolulu to brief him on the Army's initial inquiry of the battle. Because he had never been to Afghanistan, Brostrom wanted a friend, who had served as a general in the early years of war, to sit in on the presentation. Preysler, however, insisted he come alone.

"I wanted to talk to Dave Brostrom man to man, friend to friend," he said. "I wanted to grieve with him. I wanted that personal interaction that I had with him before."

Brostrom pressed his friend to answer detailed questions about the battle. "I could tell it was hard for Chip to look me in the eye," he recalled. "He wasn't the same person. He was burned out."

Preysler noticed a change in Brostrom, too. He was stunned by his friend's mastery of the details of the attack. He seemed to know where every soldier was standing and what he was doing during the first chaotic hours. "You cannot get consumed by this," Preysler told his friend. "You have another son you have to take care of. You have your wife. You have to move on."

Before he left Hawaii, Preysler handed Brostrom a copy of his brigade's Wanat investigation, which included more than 700 pages of handwritten statements, photographs and autopsy reports. The conclusions, summed up on a single PowerPoint slide, recommended paving the main road leading to Wanat, beefing up airborne surveillance for future operations and recognizing soldiers for "valorous acts." It warned troops not to become "risk averse" in the wake of the attack.

In the dining room of his home, perched on a cliff overlooking Pearl Harbor, Brostrom began to read through the soldiers' statements. Many were hard to decipher. Most of the men had written them while still in their hospital beds.

With each word he read, Brostrom became angrier. The soldiers repeatedly described equipment shortages and intelligence failures. An Afghan construction firm that was supposed to help the younger Brostrom's platoon build defensive bunkers declined to make the trip to Wanat before the battle. Without the contractor's help, the soldiers quickly ran short of basics such as water. "Every day we filled sandbags and made foxholes, trying to better improve our position," Sgt. Matthew Gobble wrote from a hospital bed in Germany. "However, due to limited supplies . . . we were only able to do so much."

Sgt. 1st Class David Dzwik, the senior enlisted soldier at the base, said that senior Army commanders seemed distracted before the platoon moved to Wanat. The operation occurred as the battalion and brigade headquarters were preparing to turn over the sector to a new unit that had just arrived from the United States. "This was the wrong time to start a new Forward Operating Base," he wrote.

Brostrom handed off the report to several retired officers he knew from his Army days. They homed in on the same oversights that had fueled his anger, he said. In November 2008, a few weeks after Preysler gave him the full report, Brostrom filed a formal complaint with the Defense Department's inspector general. The complaint didn't accuse any officers by name of negligence, but instead called for a more thorough review of the battle.

Brostrom also began feeding information to an Army historian, Douglas R. Cubbison, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., who had been directed to study the attack by Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV. Caldwell ran the Army's training centers and schools, and had been a brigade commander with the elder Brostrom in the 10th Mountain Division in the late 1990s. Brostrom's son had earned extra cash mowing Caldwell's lawn.

In May, the historian slipped Brostrom an initial draft of his report, which was harshly critical of Lt. Col. William Ostlund, the battalion commander who planned the Wanat mission, and Preysler, who oversaw it, accusing them of "unforgiving tactical error, momentary inattention and cultural ignorance."

Preysler declined to comment on the report's findings or his handling of the mission. Ostlund said that his troops encountered violence on a more regular basis in other valleys and that the risks they took were an essential part of any sound counterinsurgency strategy.

"In the back of my mind, I didn't know if I was right," Brostrom recalled. But Cubbison's report confirmed his worst fears, he said.

Army officials have said the draft will undergo major revisions before it is published. "The author lost objectivity," one senior official wrote in an e-mail. "In the chaos of a fight, not everything is that black and white."

'He Gave His Life for Them'

Early this summer, Brostrom submitted a new complaint to the inspector general. For the first time, he directly accused Preysler, Ostlund and two generals of negligence. "I didn't start out looking to go after anyone's career," he said. But the historian's findings, combined with the Army's refusal to consider a new inquiry of the battle, "made it personal," he added.

To help ensure his complaint would get attention, Brostrom also sought out a powerful patron. A friend put him in contact with a staff member in the office of Sen. James Webb (D-Va.). When the staffer arranged a short office call with the senator, Brostrom immediately flew to Washington from Hawaii.

He had been told he might have only 10 minutes with the senator, so he quickly ran through the problems his son's unit had encountered in Wanat: the lack of water, airborne surveillance and defensive material.

When he was done, the senator began asking questions. Webb's interest in Wanat grew out of his own past as a platoon leader in Vietnam. His first novel, "Fields of Fire," chronicles the combat experiences of a Marine Corps lieutenant whose unit occupied an isolated outpost surrounded by enemy-controlled mountains.

An hour and a half into the meeting, Webb excused himself for a vote on the Senate floor. The next day, he sent a letter to the Defense Department's inspector general's office asking it to open an "independent examination" of decisions taken by commanders at Wanat. "This incident . . . speaks directly about the Army's ability to speak honestly to itself and to the American public," he later wrote in an e-mail to The Washington Post.

On Sept. 30, Gen. David H. Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command, appointed a three-star Marine general to investigate the performance of commanders at Wanat. He ordered the inquiry at the request of Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Brostrom and Preysler haven't communicated since May, when the Army named a family recreation center in Hawaii after Brostrom's son. Preysler sent an e-mail that Brostrom read at the ceremony. In his short note, Preysler recalled Jonathan's "confident smile and "paratrooper swagger." He also tried to sum up his legacy: "Jon ran directly into enemy fire to help his men. He gave his life for them and in doing so saved many more."

This week Brostrom will fly to Fort Leavenworth to meet with the lead investigator in the new inquiry and press his allegations that leadership failures by Preysler and other senior officers caused the death of his son. Preysler recently assumed a new job on the Pentagon's Joint Staff, helping to oversee operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Interactive Timeline: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/sp ... -of-wanat/
